Original member Paul d'Amour was replaced in 1995 as bassist. The band first started when neighbors Carey and Keenan joined up when no one showed up for practice. Their sound has been described as progressive rock, however a grinding heavy metal sound mixed with complex rhythms, haunting vocals and many timing changes is one way to describe it. In short, the sound is unique, and doesn't fall into just one category. Though influences of King Crimson, Pink Floyd, early Yes and Genesis and Rush can be heard in their sound, they have also be acclaimed as influential themselves.

Tool started a 67-date tour of North America, Europe and a visit to Japan at Caochella in 2006. The band has been promoting the release of their latest album, 10,000 Days. Early 2007 brought the band over to Australia, and some delays to the North American tour leg were due to Danny Carey's bicep tear. They will headline Bonnaroo 2007. Lasers and lights were used along with the guest appearances of a number of artists.

Tool Concert News Update

Tool has postponed its spring 2007 tour just a week after most of the dates were announced. The reason? Band-member, drummer Danny Carey, tore a bicep and cannot ply his percussive trade with one arm.

"Over the weekend," the band said in a statement. "Danny underwent surgery today (2/21) and is recovering well. Rescheduled tour dates will be announced shortly."

Tool, known for their wild tunes and 3-D CD covers, was poised to launch its spring trek in a rocking two-nighter in Las Vegas March 15-16, and planned shows across the US and Canada till the end of April. The June14-17 Bonnaroo Festival gig in Manchester, TN is not expected to be affected by Carey's mishap.Tool recently took its intelligent but visceral sound around the world, and have been supporting their fourth studio set, "10,000 Days," which crowned The Billboard 200 album chart upon its explosive release last March. The CD earned Tool a Grammy nomination, heralding Tool's return from a three-year absence in the wake of its tour supporting 2001's "Lateralus."
