The band also includes Porl Thompson on lead guitar, Simon Gallup on bass and keyboards, and Jason Cooper on drums. There have been a number of other members, eight in fact. Glamming up the '80s alternative rock scene in England, they were pioneers of the movement, and have been considered gothic rock because of Smith's messy hair, pale face and smudged lipstick. The band has released 12 studio albums thus far, with another expected in 2007. The Cure toured in 2005, playing at Live 8 in Paris.

In April of 2006 they performed for the Teenage Cancer Trust, their only show that year. They released a live DVD of their 2005 tour in December of 2006. The album to be released is expected to be a double-album similar in style to Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. The 1987 album spawned "Just Like Heaven" and "Why Can't I Be You?" Other songs they are known for are "A Forest," "In Between Days" and "Lovesong."

The Cure Update

The Cure have made an abundance of interesting music videos since their first video "A Forest" in 1980. The early videos were roundly disliked, despite the excellence of the music, for the lack of personality inherent, which was noticed by the band themselves. Lol Tolhurst said, "Those videos were unmitigated disasters; we weren't actors and our personalities weren't coming across." Director Tim Pope became involved with The Cure, and directed most of the band's videos from that point on, which carried a very distinctive appearance. The Cure's audience during the 1980s was widened as a result of this characteristic style, because almost anybody could see a Cure video and recognize it as an artful and well-executed piece of work. Undoubtedly, Pope's contribution to the band's artistic reservoir caused tickets for The Cure concerts to be considered a hot commodity, as people sought to see the band for themselves. Robert Smith appeared as his own voice in the first season of South Park. Apparently, South Park co-creator Trey Parker was a fan of the band, and he wanted Smith to appear on his show. In his episode "Mecha-Streisand," Smith fought a battle for supremacy with a giant Barbra Streisand robot. After Smith triumphed, and was walking into the distance at the end of the episode, a main character from the series shouted after him "Disintegration is the best album ever!"

A band as unpredictable and individualistic as The Cure will forever be emerging to perform new tours out of the blue, and fans are always searching the news for information. In the event of a tour announcement, there is always a mad rush to tickets for The Cure concerts in the peoples' hometowns, and a nostalgic trip back to the glory days of the band ensues.
