They were first known as The Young Aborigines until 1981. With a mix of MCing, jazz, funk and rock, their music crosses many genres and their fan base reflects their diversity and longevity, as their music has spanned generations. Mike D, Ad-rock, MCA and Mix Master Mike have been responsible for creating a movement that centers on changing experimental styles and intentional silliness. The group often dresses in matching suits, such as the orange jumpsuits which were featured in their Sabotage video and last tour.

Their 1986 album Licensed to Ill was the best-selling album of the '80s, and the first rap album to make it to No. 1 on the Billboard chart. It remained in that spot for five weeks. "Fight for Your Right" is still a teen anthem. The release of Paul's Boutique in 1988 was one of their strongest, the sample heavy album was a landmark for hip hop recording with their use of multi-layering. Check Your Head in 1992 went double platinum, and the follow up Ill Communication in 1994 brought the Beasties to the top of the charts once again.
