When they broke up in 1987, he successfully secured 10 Top Ten solo singles on the UK charts. The Smiths were one of the most influential bands of the '80s alternative rock movement. Morrissey's first solo album was Viva Hate, a jangle pop sound, and headed to the number one spot right from the start. "Everyday Is Like Sunday" and "Suedehead" were strong. His Kill Uncle tour in 1991 spawned the album Your Arsenal, which received a Grammy for Best Alternative Album.

Vauxhall and I took Morrissey back to No. 1 in the UK in 1994, "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" made it to No. 46 in the US, and No. 8 in the UK. The album You Are the Quarry in 2004 reached number three with its single "Irish Blood, English Heart" in its first week in the UK. This was his career highpoint, even including his time with The Smiths. In 2004, he joined McFly by becoming the only artists to get four Top 10's in the UK that year.

Morrissey Concert News

Morrissey continues to make new music and head out on tour, taking his peculiar mess of British soap opera-cum-literary sophisticate brand of musical expression on a trek around the USA. The intellectual oddball from Southpaw Grammar has announced a tour with a series of dates which include a June 30th show at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias will handle the guitars, while talented Michael Farrell will play both keyboards and trumpet. Solomon Walker supplies bass and Matt Walker is on drums.

The singer, who claims it was only his athletic strength which spared him merciless bullying as a child, has cited inspiration from sources as diverse as James Dean and the New York Dolls, and this is reflected in the utter originality of his music. It is almost as if the strange young boy from Manchester, who spent a goodly fraction of his adolescence and youth locked away in his room, studying literature and music, and presumably watching the Manchester soap opera, Coronation Street, was simply doing a form of research all along.

The tour began February 1, in Pasadena, California, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, and so far at least 30 dates are known, as the eccentric and his band move through Nevada, Washington, Utah, Colorado, and Nebraska. By May 12 the tour will have reached Milwaukie and be ready to take another zigzag back down through Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and eventually down to Texas by May 25, on to Arizona, Nevada again, and California. The Madison Square Garden date is the climax of the journey, taking place on June 30. If I were to go out to try and find cheap Morrissey tickets, I think it would have to be the Hollywood Bowl show on June 8, but Morrissey at MSG is a pretty different prospect, too. It seems like anyone who finds Morrissey tickets can't really lose out this time .
