After moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1998 he began to gain him a following. His 2006 album Continuum gained him two Grammys, one for Best Pop Vocal Album, and on for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Waiting on the World to Change." He is also a writer, having been published in Esquire Magazine, and a stand-up comic. After two semesters at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mayer dropped out. By 2002 he had been signed to Columbia Records, and released Room for Squares in 2002. The hits "No Such Thing," "Your Body Is A Wonderland," and "Why, Georgia" were quite successful, gaining him a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for "Your Body Is A Wonderland." In 2003 the song "Daughters" brought him yet another Grammy, this time for Song of the Year in 2005. He also won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance yet again.

In 2005 he formed the John Mayer Trio, a blues/rock band that released a live album of their own. Continuum included some songs from the group. Rolling Stone called John Mayer "Slowhand Jr." in reference to the guitar great, Eric Clapton. Mayer allows taping at his performances, and trading of those recordings non-commercially.
